--- slug: penney-dice passed: 2026-10-14 by: the assay line (research/assay-line/queue-1014c/), Codex fixer and repair worker directed by claude-assaying-boyle-1014; source record by Codex, checked by Codex checked: 101 confirmed: 88 wrong: 12 unverifiable: 0 observed: 0 stale: 1 --- This was the directed correction pass for penney-dice at 8bb91db83a, using research/assay-line/queue-1014c/penney-dice/triage.json. The fixer re-read the evidence for all 13 triage items before editing and independently recreated the mathematical counterexamples with both exact engines. The 88 CONFIRMED claims and their evidence notes below are retained from the Codex checker's N2-codex.md; they describe that checker's source rereads at f5e5f84f34, not a new live check of every external source. The affected layer sources did not change between that snapshot and 8bb91db83a. The wrong count comprises five WRONG and seven MINOR findings; the metadata finding remains STALE. No historical observation is recast as a present-day catalogue claim. ## Claims - MINOR | X1: “a first-principles Markov solver on every pair” | git show f5e5f84f34:research/penney-mary/verify.mjs | Re-read verify.mjs, lines 33-54: fullCal is (2,4), (2,5), (3,2), (3,3), (4,2), (5,2); sampCal is (3,4), (4,3), (5,3). The latter runs 200 draws and skips identical words. The current source matches the checker snapshot. All-pairs calibration is limited to the six full cases. The sequence loop at verify.mjs:154-160 uses tournament with its default Conway solver (engine.mjs:134); it extends to k=6 for m=3, while Markov samples stop at k=4. The repair pass removed the surviving two-method sequence claims from the dek and JSON-LD. - WRONG | X2: “whatever you pick, someone can pick one that beats it” | https://www.combinatorics.org/ojs/index.php/eljc/article/download/v13i1r35/pdf/ | Re-read Felix (2006), abstract and introduction, p. 1: the winning-response result requires a fixed common length n >= 3. Recreated both exact engines: P(HT before HH)=1/2, P(HT before TH)=1/2, P(HT before TT)=3/4. No length-two opponent strictly beats HT. - WRONG | X3: “for coins, whatever word you pick, I can pick one that beats it.” | https://www.combinatorics.org/ojs/index.php/eljc/article/download/v13i1r35/pdf/ | Re-read Felix (2006), p. 1, and the authored lede. The Penney/1969 attribution is supported; the unrestricted winning-response assertion is false. Both exact engines give the HT counterexample recorded for X2. - WRONG | X4: “There is no best word” | https://www.combinatorics.org/ojs/index.php/eljc/article/download/v13i1r35/pdf/ | Re-read the same lede and Felix (2006), p. 1. Both exact engines show HT and TH unbeaten at length two; enumeration gives no directed cycle there. The no-best-word assertion now explicitly inherits k >= 3. - MINOR | X5: “that agreement is what proves the generalised formula” | git show f5e5f84f34:research/penney-mary/verify.mjs | Re-read verify.mjs, lines 3-6 and 33-54. Finite complete cases and random samples provide empirical validation of tested cases, not a proof for all inputs. Felix p. 2 gives the general odds formula and identifies published proofs separately. - MINOR | X6: “every clear matchup” | git show f5e5f84f34:research/penney-mary/verify.mjs | Re-read verify.mjs, lines 81-98. The Monte Carlo section draws samples at (m,k)=(3,3),(4,2), skips identical words and exact ties, and flags sign disagreements only when the empirical distance from 1/2 exceeds 0.07. This does not cover every matchup. - MINOR | X7: “beyond the five tested” | git show f5e5f84f34:research/penney-mary/verify.mjs | Re-read verify.mjs, lines 123-146: the onset loop uses m in [2,3,4,5], which is four die sizes. The page itself lists those same four values. - MINOR | X8: “staged in oversight/oeis/penney-mary/.” | git show f5e5f84f34:oversight/oeis/penney-mary/README.md | Re-read oversight/oeis/penney-mary/README.md, especially lines 90-109, and the directory contents. The engine and three-method verifier are in research/penney-mary/; the b-files and staging instructions are in oversight/oeis/penney-mary/. - MINOR | X9: “computed live by Conway's leading-number formula.” | git show f5e5f84f34:public/strata/penney-dice/index.html | Re-read drawRing and selfCheck in the authored HTML. Initial labels use the literal 3/5; the in-page calculation checks ring probabilities separately. After a race the labels display percentages, not exact fractions. - MINOR | X10: “the bars converge on 3/5.” | git show f5e5f84f34:public/strata/penney-dice/index.html | Re-read the ring race handler: each click starts 2,000 trials for each edge, assigns fresh empirical shares, then calls drawRing. The ring has SVG text labels; the bar belongs to the separate bench. - STALE | X11: “"dateModified":"2026-06-21"” | git log f5e5f84f34 -- public/strata/penney-dice/index.html; git show 930a83ddbfa:public/strata/penney-dice/index.html | Re-read the JSON-LD and file history through 8bb91db83a. The DOI was added in commit 930a83ddbfa on 2026-09-03, and the reader-recipe link changed on 2026-09-28, while dateModified still said 2026-06-21. Set the requested pass date, 2026-10-14. The explicit metadata exception requires no separate Updated line. - WRONG | X12: “with three or more faces the triangle appears at length 2 (01 ▸ 12 ▸ 20, each 3/5).” | https://raw.githubusercontent.com/artwasteland/Maths/main/penney-tournaments/oversight/oeis/penney-mary/STAGED.md | Re-fetched STAGED.md: lines 59-64 limit 3/5 to a fair three-sided die. The overlap values for A=01 and B=12 are AA=BB=m, AB=1, BA=0, so the published odds formula gives P(A before B)=m/(2m-1). Both exact engines reproduce 3/5, 4/7, 5/9 for m=3,4,5. The authored relation now scopes 3/5 to three faces. The preserved quotation at notes[944].note in public/strata/there-here/index.html:250 and research/lineage-edge-grammar/page.json:1 still has the false universal fraction with no adjacent correction. Those other-layer copies remain open; their quoted words must be preserved. - WRONG | X13: “any die with three or more faces makes a balanced 3/5 rock-paper-scissors triangle at length two.” | https://raw.githubusercontent.com/artwasteland/Maths/main/penney-tournaments/oversight/oeis/penney-mary/STAGED.md | Re-read the same staging source and exact engines. Independent Markov enumeration gives two length-two triangles at m=3 with every edge 3/5 and eight at m=4 with every edge 4/7. The markdown summary now gives m/(2m-1), with 3/5 specifically at m=3. - CONFIRMED | “Penney's game on a fair coin is nontransitive from length three (HHT beats HTT beats TTH beats THH beats HHT), but that loop is a square: search every three-way contest among three-flip words and no rock-paper-scissors triangle exists until length four, where fourteen appear at once.” | https://raw.githubusercontent.com/artwasteland/Maths/main/penney-tournaments/oversight/oeis/penney-mary/STAGED.md | Prior checker evidence: Entry dek-0. The staging source says "no directed triangle until n=4" and "arrive together at n = 2" for larger dice. Independently reproduced the coin counts and onsets; 8 choose 3 = 56. From the published overlap formula, the 01/12/20 ring has probability m/(2m-1) > 1/2 for every m >= 3; length-one distinct symbols tie. This also proves the all-m onset assertion without extrapolating a finite sample. - CONFIRMED | “Roll a three-sided die and the triangle is already there at length two: 01 beats 12 beats 20 beats 01, each with probability exactly 3/5 (and its mirror, and only those two).” | https://raw.githubusercontent.com/artwasteland/Maths/main/penney-tournaments/oversight/oeis/penney-mary/STAGED.md | Prior checker evidence: Entry dek-2. The source lists "01 ▸ 12 ▸ 20 ▸ 01" and its mirror and gives the m=3 triangle prefix "0, 2, 60, 2144". Exact enumeration and the independent Markov solver found precisely two length-two triangles, all six directed edges having probability 3/5. - CONFIRMED | “The coin's famous 'no triangle at three' turns out to be a peculiarity of having only two symbols: two faces can't break the length-two tie, three can.” | https://raw.githubusercontent.com/artwasteland/Maths/main/penney-tournaments/oversight/oeis/penney-mary/STAGED.md | Prior checker evidence: Entry dek-3. Human responsibility with allowed AI assistance does not make AI authorship permissible; the page's narrow authorship claim remains supported. - CONFIRMED | “what is staged is the computation, for a human to verify and author, or to deposit on Zenodo for a citable DOI.” | git show f5e5f84f34:oversight/oeis/penney-mary/README.md | Prior checker evidence: Entry human-authorship-staging. The full README says there are "deliberately no paste-ready `draft.txt` files here" and provides "OEIS only via a real human author" and a Zenodo route. This is the staged computation and intended human authorship route, not an assertion of an already submitted OEIS entry. - CONFIRMED | “This layer's check works the answer out again from scratch, independently of this page.” | git show f5e5f84f34:research/penney-mary/verify.mjs | Prior checker evidence: Entry check-independent. The verifier imports only "./engine.mjs" and recomputes its answers without reading the HTML or markdown. The empty-directory reader run confirms that independence. The page accurately discloses the resulting inability to detect prose drift. - CONFIRMED | “The exact line is P(A before B) as an exact fraction (Conway / Guibas–Odlyzko leading numbers).” | git show f5e5f84f34:public/strata/penney-dice/index.html | Prior checker evidence: Entry caption-1-0. The quoted implementation calls "pAfirst(M,A,B)" for the exact fraction and counts simulated wins in wA/wB. Running the pinned inline script locally with a minimal DOM reproduces the fraction and tally; the 1000-race control gives A=600, B=400 for the tested 3-die ring pair. - CONFIRMED | “"A's share" is the empirical fraction from the simulated races; it converges on the fraction.” | git show f5e5f84f34:public/strata/penney-dice/index.html | Prior checker evidence: Entry caption-1-1. The definitions match the code: p=1/2 ties, cyc3 counts triples with one outgoing edge per vertex, and maxout is the largest count of strictly beaten opponents. Recreated inline and offline tables agree term for term. - CONFIRMED | “"Nontransitivity" = the first length with any directed cycle; "triangle" = the first length with a directed 3-cycle.” | https://raw.githubusercontent.com/artwasteland/Maths/main/penney-tournaments/oversight/oeis/penney-mary/STAGED.md | Prior checker evidence: Entry caption-2-0. - CONFIRMED | “The gap between them is the whole story: 1 for the coin (it cycles at 3 but can't make a triangle until 4), 0 for every die with 3+ sides (both arrive together at length 2).” | https://raw.githubusercontent.com/artwasteland/Maths/main/penney-tournaments/oversight/oeis/penney-mary/STAGED.md | Prior checker evidence: Entry caption-2-1. - CONFIRMED | “The two rings are mirror images (swap two faces of the die). Both balance at exactly 3/5” [...] “and they are the only nontransitive triangles among length-2 words on a 3-sided die.” | https://raw.githubusercontent.com/artwasteland/Maths/main/penney-tournaments/oversight/oeis/penney-mary/STAGED.md | Prior checker evidence: Entry mirror-click-caption. - CONFIRMED | “Raced 2000 times per edge. Each empirical share lands near 3/5 = 60%” [...] “the exact value the formula gives.” | git show f5e5f84f34:public/strata/penney-dice/index.html | Prior checker evidence: Entry race-loop-caption. The button code uses "for(let t=0;t<2000;t++)" for each of three edges and calls drawRing(). The observed three shares were near 0.6. It changes SVG percentage labels, not bars; the race-bench bars are a different widget. - CONFIRMED | “1/2” [...] “a dead tie” | git show f5e5f84f34:public/strata/penney-dice/index.html | Prior checker evidence: Entry bench-conditional-tie. The code tests "if(p.half)" before displaying "1/2" and "a dead tie". Distinct words with equal probability receive the tie label; identical words instead trigger "pick two different words". - CONFIRMED | “B named first; A is the killer reply” | git show f5e5f84f34:public/strata/penney-dice/index.html | Prior checker evidence: Entry bench-best-response. The autopick code enumerates all candidate responses and retains the largest probability greater than 1/2 before displaying "B named first; A is the killer reply". It does not claim that every length-two coin word is beatable. - CONFIRMED | “Sequel to No Triangle at Three and Always Bet Second.” | git show f5e5f84f34:src/content/strata/penney-dice.md | Prior checker evidence: Entry footer-sequel. Odlyzko's own publication list gives "String overlaps, pattern matching, and nontransitive games", L. J. Guibas and A. M. Odlyzko, volume 30 (1981), pp. 183-208. HTML tag whitespace explains the trivial exact-string normalization difference. The source tool also reports DOI MATCH. - CONFIRMED | “The sequences behind this page are published as open data and code: the b-files, the engine that produced them and the verifier that checks it, together with a per-term account of what has been recomputed and what has not.” | https://raw.githubusercontent.com/artwasteland/Maths/main/penney-tournaments/README.md | Prior checker evidence: Entry open-data-publication. The fetched public README lists the engines, verifiers, b-files and the per-term verification table headed "staged", "recomputed", "drift-guarded", "unbound". It explains deduplication of six overlapping sequences, so the data remain published under the longer equivalent files. - CONFIRMED | “Deposited, and citable by DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.21943922” | https://zenodo.org/api/records/21943922 | Prior checker evidence: Entry deposited-doi. curl opens the source successfully: the Zenodo API returns "doi": "10.5281/zenodo.21943922", "access_right": "open", and a published dataset with an 88241-byte archive. The tool's failed fetch and Crossref 404 are not evidence that this Zenodo deposit is missing. - CONFIRMED | “Penney's game on a fair coin is nontransitive from length three, but the smallest loop is a four-square; no rock-paper-scissors triangle exists until length four.” | https://raw.githubusercontent.com/artwasteland/Maths/main/penney-tournaments/oversight/oeis/penney-mary/STAGED.md | Prior checker evidence: Entry description-0. Replaced unrestricted all-pairs calibration in the dek, markdown body, HTML checking paragraph and engine documentation with six full cases and three sampled cases. The fixer clarified the README and verifier header and regenerated this layer's two verbatim published source copies. The repair pass also replaced the surviving two-method sequence claims at src/content/strata/penney-dice.md:4 and public/strata/penney-dice/index.html:21 with Conway computation and bounded Markov calibration. No page correction line. - [fixed] X2 (WRONG). Restricted the plain field and HTML aw-plain copy to a fair coin and a fixed common word length of at least three. Covered by the first dated correction, mirrored in markdown. - [fixed] X3 (WRONG). Added k >= 3 to the coin winning-response statement in the lede, preserving Penney/1969. Covered by the first dated correction. - [fixed] X4 (WRONG). Scoped no-best-word to those same lengths in the lede. Covered by the first dated correction. - [fixed] X5 (MINOR). Replaced the claimed general proof with an independent empirical cross-check in tested cases. Removed re-proven from the dek. No page correction line. - [fixed] X6 (MINOR). Restricted Monte Carlo agreement to tested clear matchups in samples at (3,3) and (4,2), and qualified the shorter calibration summaries. No page correction line. - [fixed] X7 (MINOR). Changed five tested to four tested sizes. No page correction line. - [fixed] X8 (MINOR). Gave research/penney-mary/ for the engine and verifier and oversight/oeis/penney-mary/ for b-files and staging instructions. No page correction line. - [fixed] X9 (MINOR). Described initial ring probabilities as checked live and distinguished the empirical percentages after a race. No page correction line. - [fixed] X10 (MINOR). Replaced bars converging with ring labels showing empirical win shares after a fresh 2,000 trials per edge, typically near 3/5. No page correction line. - [dated] X11 (STALE). Updated JSON-LD dateModified from 2026-06-21 to the requested pass date, 2026-10-14. No separate Updated or Corrected line under the explicit metadata exception; the two mathematical correction lines date this revision. - [open note:5f5331] X12 (WRONG). The authored relation's 3/5 fraction is restricted to a three-sided die, retaining the length-two onset for every m >= 3, with a dated correction mirrored in markdown. The preserved quotation at notes[944].note in public/strata/there-here/index.html:250 and research/lineage-edge-grammar/page.json:1 still assigns 3/5 to all larger dice. These other-layer copies need an adjacent correction through research/lineage-edge-grammar/copy-corrections.mjs, linking to /strata/penney-dice/#corrections and preserving the quotation. The directing instance must obtain the board note id and replace PENDING; see research/assay-line/queue-1014c/penney-dice/repair-report.md. - [fixed] X13 (WRONG). Replaced the markdown summary's universal 3/5 with m/(2m - 1), which is 3/5 for three faces. Covered by the second dated correction. ## Edit report The authored penney-dice copies for X1 through X13 are corrected. X12 remains open for the preserved quotation in another layer, pending a board note. Five WRONG findings describe two distinct mathematical errors; seven MINOR findings have record-only dispositions; X11 is STALE with the JSON-LD dating exception. No finding was rejected. The edit and validation details below describe the fixer pass; repair changes and rerun results are in research/assay-line/queue-1014c/penney-dice/repair-report.md. The HTML is authored directly, with no layer page generator found. The markdown frontmatter authors the catalogue/relationship text; its body is not served. The published engine and verifier were regenerated by copying their edited sources byte for byte. Their byte counts still match the shared manifest, which was not edited. The entries below give the final file:line and the changed text before and after. In before text, `[U+2014]` denotes the original em dash without reproducing that character. Corrected 2026-10-14: This page said every coin word could be beaten, without a length restriction. That holds for words of a fixed common length of at least three; at length two, HT and TH have no strictly winning response (found by the assay line, 2026-10-14). Corrected 2026-10-14: This layer's summary and related-page note assigned a 3/5 win probability to the length-two triangle for every die with at least three faces. For a fair m-sided die with m at least 3, each edge of 01 ▸ 12 ▸ 20 ▸ 01 wins with probability m/(2m - 1): 3/5 for three faces, 4/7 for four (found by the assay line, 2026-10-14).Corrections
