The 93 Percent That Only Exists in a Contradiction
"93% of communication is nonverbal" is a real number attached to the wrong question. It is Mehrabian's 7% words / 38% tone / 55% face, and it answers exactly one thing: how do you guess whether someone likes you when a single word, its tone, and their face all disagree? Set the channels to agree and the famous split changes nothing. Set them to fight and watch the verdict flip to the face. Mehrabian himself calls the general use "absurd."
The figure comes from two 1967 experiments on roughly 137 undergraduates, each hearing a single spoken word (like "dear," "maybe," "terrible") whose vocal tone and facial expression were deliberately made to contradict the word. Mehrabian fit a weighted sum to the ratings and got Inferred liking = 0.07·word + 0.38·tone + 0.55·face. Nonverbal (tone + face) sums to 0.93. That is the whole of "93% nonverbal." What kind of message is this?
Attitudinal: the message is about liking or feeling. This is the only case Mehrabian's equation was ever measured for.
The two things the mixer shows
1. When the channels agree, the weights do nothing. Set word, tone, and face all warm and the readout is a clean +1.00. But so would any weighting that sums to one: a plain third-each average also gives +1.00. There is no contradiction to resolve, so the famous 7/38/55 split resolves nothing. This is the normal case of everyday speech, where your words, voice, and face point the same way, and it is precisely the case the 93% figure says nothing about.
2. When they conflict, the face wins, and that is the 93%. Say "thanks" in a cold voice with a scowl and the inference lands at 0.07 - 0.38 - 0.55 = -0.86: strongly disliking, following the tone and face against the word. This flip, the one case where the verbal channel is overwhelmed, is the entire empirical content of "93% nonverbal." It is a finding about resolving contradiction, not a bandwidth of communication.
So is the number fake? No. The question is.
The coefficients are right. The generalisation is the error.
The honest move here is not to sneer at the studies. For what they measured, the .07 / .38 / .55 weights are correctly computed, and the deeper point the myth's kernel is groping at is true: nonverbal channels really do dominate, but only in the razor-thin case actually tested, where the cues conflict and the content is emotional or attitudinal. When word, tone, and face agree (the normal case), the weights break no tie because there is no tie. And the split says nothing about information: a phone number read in a bored voice is the same number as one read excitedly.
So the deepest answer is not "the number is fake." It is that the number is a real answer to a different question, welded onto one it does not fit:
"How do I judge someone's feelings when their words and their face disagree?"
93% nonverbal is a true answer. For single, isolated, emotionally-loaded words in deliberate conflict, listeners lean overwhelmingly on tone and face. The coefficients measure exactly this.
"How much of communication is body language?"
93% is a false answer. There is no fixed percentage. It depends on the message, the channels, and whether they agree. Asking for one number is asking an ill-posed question, so we do not offer a rival "true percentage" here. There isn't one.
The myth survives because it flattened a finding about breaking a contradiction into a universal bandwidth law. Same number, wrong ruler.
Where the split actually came from: two studies, stitched
The single most misreported thing about the 55% figure: it does not come from an experiment that had all three channels at once. The verbal channel was not even present in the study that produced the facial weight. Mehrabian combined two separate 1967 experiments into one equation:

Study 1 gives the relative pull of word against tone. Study 2 gives the relative pull of tone against face, with no words at all. Mehrabian normalised and combined them into the single three-term equation the mixer runs. Total participants across the two: about 137 undergraduates. Everything downstream, every "communication is 93% body language" slide in every sales seminar, is built on that stitch.

What's exactly true here, and what's a model
Exactly true. The 7/38/55 coefficients are real and come from Mehrabian's two 1967 studies, combined in Silent Messages (1971). Tone + face = 0.93. The second study (tone vs face) had no verbal channel, so the 55% facial figure was never measured alongside words in one experiment; the split is a stitch of two experiments. The stimuli were single, isolated, emotionally-loaded words with deliberately inconsistent tone and face, judged for liking, by about 137 undergraduates total. Mehrabian's own disclaimers (quoted above) restrict the equations to messages about feelings and attitudes.
Not "wrong" or "debunked." We do not claim the studies were faked or the math is wrong. The coefficients are correctly computed for what they measured. The error the page corrects is the over-generalisation: taking a result about resolving conflicting attitudinal cues and restating it as a universal law that 93% of all communication is nonverbal. Nonverbal cues genuinely matter, and matter most exactly when they contradict the words.
A model, not a measurement (the demo mapping). The three-state (-1 / 0 / +1) valence per channel is a teaching simplification so the equation can be operated in ten seconds. It reproduces the qualitative facts faithfully: agreement makes the weights inert, conflict makes the nonverbal channels win, and the verbal term can only move the result by at most 0.07. It is not a claim that real liking is quantised.
The honest concession. There is a real thing the myth points at: in face-to-face emotional exchange, when cues conflict, people really do trust the face and voice over the words. That is worth knowing. It is just not "93% of communication is body language."
