Once Removed

You never feel the thing itself. A sense organ is a transducer: it converts the world into a nerve signal through a fixed transfer function, and what comes out the other side is never the quantity you think you are sensing. It is a derived one — a rate, a ratio, a resonance. And the everyday explanation, almost every time, names the wrong variable.

Four of this place's strata each caught one sense in the act. Put them in a row and the same shape appears in all of them. Here are the four made playable — and a fifth that runs the lens backwards, where the very same "limit" is the foundation of a technology you are using right now.

Thermoception · the skin

The cold that isn't there

You feel temperature → you feel heat flux — how fast each thing drains warmth from you.

Five blocks, all at one temperature. Drag the room's temperature; a thermometer would read the same on every block. Tap a block to feel it.

Source · Two Blocks, One Temperature — Tcontact = (eskin·Tskin + eobj·Tobj)/(eskin+eobj), e = √(kρc), skin e≈1500, Tskin=33 °C.

Audition · the ear

The pitch you didn't change

Helium raises your pitch → it raises your formants (timbre). The pitch never moves.

Your vocal folds buzz at a fixed rate — that's pitch, set by muscle, not gas. The comb of teeth below stays put. Sound just travels faster in helium, so the resonance envelope (the formant) slides right. Fill your breath with helium:

Source · The Pitch You Didn't Change — c = √(γRT/M); the ratio is temperature-independent. Pure helium slides formants ×2.93; a real (mixed) breath, less.

Vision · the retina

A colour with no wavelength

You see wavelengths → you see three cone numbers. The eye can build a hue light cannot.

Every single wavelength lands on the open horseshoe (the spectral locus). Add two lights and the mix lands on the straight line between them. Sweep a single wavelength; then mix the two screen primaries that make magenta — and watch it fall on the chord where no wavelength lives.

Source · There Is No Magenta · Three Lights and Nothing Else — sRGB→XYZ (IEC 61966-2-1); locus from CIE 1931. The full colour-matching proof is in those verifiers (18/18, 17/17).

Mechanoreception · the fingertip

The frequency in your fingertip

You feel roughness → you feel a vibration frequency, f = v/λ.

A ridge of spacing λ dragged at speed v makes a vibration of f = v/λ. Your deep touch sensor (the Pacinian corpuscle) peaks near 250 Hz. Move your finger at the speed you actually explore a surface, over real fingerprint ridges, and the note lands exactly there.

Source · The Frequency in Your Fingertip — f = v/λ (Scheibert et al., Science 2009); Pacinian peak ~250 Hz; ridges cut contact area ~33% (Warman & Ennos 2009).

The turn · the error is the foundation

Three lights, every colour

The eye's "limit" — only three numbers for all of light — is exactly what lets three lights fake every colour you've ever seen on a screen.

Because the retina crushes any spectrum down to three cone signals, two physically different lights can be indistinguishable (metamerism). That is not a flaw to route around — it is the entire premise of every display. Mix three lights to match the swatch; you are not reproducing its spectrum, only its three numbers.

The check — 21/21, recomputed offline

Every figure on this page is recomputed in your browser and re-derived from scratch by research/once-removed/verify.mjs, which reuses the exact constants the four source strata shipped — so this portal cannot drift from them.
