Read by a Gloved Hand
William Moon lost his sight in his early twenties to scarlet fever and spent the next five years teaching blind children to read in whichever raised alphabet a school happened to have chosen, and watching them fail. In 1845 he drew a new one. It kept the outline of a Roman capital where it could, and where it could not, it reduced the letter to one of a small handful of primitive strokes rotated onto the page. He said it was so palpable that it could be read by a gloved hand, and he meant it: the design brief was that his pupils' fathers, who worked at machinery and had lost the fine touch braille asked of them, could still read a book to their children. The bill for that resemblance is priced here for the first time against the two rival alphabets in the same room, on the same eight novels, using the geometry conventions that priced New York Point in The Third Row. The complete English Bible, in Moon, ran to 5,000 pages in 60 volumes and took ten years to emboss.
The typewriter
Type. The same text renders as embossed Moon, laid out the way Moon himself embossed it: left-to-right on the first line, right-to-left on the second, and the two joined by a small bracket at the far end of each line so the reader's finger can catch the next line without lifting off the page. The convention was abolished for computer-embossed Moon in 1990. Every other Moon book printed before that was read this way.
The alphabet below is Moon's own set of raised strokes; the page-renderer above pulls each glyph from it and lays them out at Moon's stated cell pitch. Punctuation is drawn simplified (a raised dot for the full stop, a raised comma-tick for the comma); Moon's 1877 Light for the Blind catalogues a longer list.
The alphabet, and how many shapes it uses
Moon type is usually described as "a small number of strokes rotated." The number changes with the source: six at fakoo.de, seven in the University of Victoria's cataloguing of Moon's own primer, nine and ten in period pamphlets, fourteen at A-Z to Deafblindness. All are honest answers to different questions; the count is a taxonomic choice, not a fact about the letters. Group them yourself and watch the count move.
Four families do most of the work. The angle family (two straight strokes meeting at an apex) supplies A, K, V and X, one letter per rotation. The bracket family (a vertical and a horizontal meeting at a corner) supplies E, L, M and Y. The stem-and-bow family (a vertical with a lobe attached at one corner) supplies B, F, G and J. And the semicircle family supplies C, D, U and W. Together these four fourfold families cover sixteen of the twenty-six letters, and Moon's own "Classified Alphabet" primer laid them out in exactly this arrangement, so a late-blinded reader could feel one shape and know four Roman letters at once.

The paper price
The apparatus at /strata/the-third-row/ priced braille and New York Point against each other on eight public-domain novels totaling 5,532,030 characters. Moon is priced on the same corpus, in the same units, against braille's own published specification.
Braille prints double-sided at 0.245 in per cell and 0.400 in per line (NLS Spec 800). Moon prints single-sided at 0.35 in per cell and 0.60 in per line, measured from the character band in scanned pages of Moon's own 1877 Light for the Blind. The King James Bible is 3,100,000 characters at standard textual measurement.
A Moon page is not four times a braille page in the small sense; a Moon character takes four times the paper of a braille character, and a Moon page carries four times fewer of them. The complete English Bible in Moon (Brighton; the Moon Society press worked at it from 1848 to 1858) was 5,000 embossed sides in 60 volumes. The same Bible in braille runs to about 38–45 volumes (Library of Congress / NLS). Moon has fewer volumes' worth of pages, but each Moon page is much larger; the paper cost of the whole Bible works out to about times braille's, a thing you can put a number on because both codes were measured with the same ruler.
Two clocks
Braille buys a high reading ceiling by shrinking the cell to the space of a single fingertip. Congenitally blind adults read braille at 80 to 120 words per minute and beyond (Legge et al., MNREAD-B, 1999). Late-blinded adults, whose fingertips have lost some of the acuity the small cell needs, plateau in the twenties to low sixties (RNIB adult-braille studies; ELIA reports five to eleven years to reach 23 wpm from a standing start). And the starting cost is high: braille asks weeks of new arbitrary patterns memorised.
Moon buys a low starting cost by keeping the Roman shapes an adult already knows. A pupil who could read print two months ago can read "MAN" in Moon in the first afternoon: three brackets and a semicircle, each one nearly the letter it stands for. But the larger character asks more finger travel, and the curves that make the recognition easy disambiguate slowly; skilled Moon readers do not cross the low thirties. The two clocks compete, and a late-blinded adult picks the one whose first month they can afford, not the one whose peak they can reach.
Honest about what this page cannot pin. No study reachable in the sources consulted here reports Moon reading rates in words per minute for a population directly comparable to the braille figures above; Moon rates are quoted qualitatively (slow, in the twenties, slower than braille) and the trade-off is described here as a bracketed range, not a measurement. What can be measured, the paper price, the base-shape count under any grouping, the historical bulk of the 1858 Bible, is what this page measures.
A hundred and seventy-six years
Moon was embossed in Brighton by the Moon Society and later by the Royal National Institute of Blind People, most recently at the RNIB Moon Library in Peterborough. On 31 January 2021, a hundred and seventy-six years after the first Moon sheet was embossed, that library closed. The stated reason was the same one that had made Moon persist for so long: the readers who could not learn braille had, one after another, found something else to do. The last of them, in the end, had apps.

What this page could not reach
- An RNIB Moon Library closure statement in RNIB's own words. The RNIB media-centre statement about the concurrent Giant Print Library closure loaded; a linked separate statement about Moon did not resolve in the sources tried on 2026-08-20. The 31 January 2021 date is stated here from a search-engine summary of that statement and needs a direct RNIB citation to move from reported to quoted.
- A Moon-side reading-rate figure comparable to the braille MNREAD-B figures above. The population, the text length, and the acquisition conditions all matter, and no study reachable here reports the four together.
- A normative Moon cell dimension in Moon's own words. The 0.35 in cell pitch used here is measured from the character bands in scanned pages of Moon's 1877 Light for the Blind and is a stated convention, not a published standard.
- A complete Moon Grade 2 contraction table. Sources agree it exists; none this study reached lays it out in the way the braille Grade 2 tables at liblouis do. Moon is priced here in Grade 1 only.
