Six Months Behind the Sun
The Sun reached the maximum of Cycle 25 in October 2024. Nobody could say so until May 2025, and for eleven monthly updates before that the official answer was a different month and a smaller number every time. This page recomputes all of it from SILSO's own files, fetched when you loaded it.
Where the Sun is, in two currencies
Both boxes are true and they disagree, because they are different statistics. The left one is smoothed and therefore late. The right one is current and therefore noisy. Mixing them, putting tonight's monthly mean over the smoothed peak, is the single most common way to get a sunspot number wrong, so this page never does it.

The anchor: make it reproduce their published numbers first
SILSO published an article titled "Solar Cycle 25 reached its maximum in October 2024", which states:
the maximum value of the monthly smoothed sunspot number for Solar Cycle 25 was reached in October 2024 and is 161 (see figure 1), versus 159 for September and 157 for November 2024.
They derived those from their smoothed file. We derive them from their monthly file, by applying the 13-month weighted mean ourselves, and then check the result against every smoothed value they ever published. If our smoother did not agree with them on the months they have published, it would have no business speaking about the months they have not.

The control: can this comparison fail?
Agreeing with SILSO three thousand times proves nothing unless the comparison is capable of disagreeing. So plant a wrong value. The number you set below is added to that month in the monthly data array, before anything runs, and every calculation on this page then reads the doctored array without being told. Nothing is appended to a result list. If the comparison stays green with an error planted in it, the comparison is worthless and you have caught this page being worthless.
The frontier, and the six months that do not exist yet
SILSO's smoothed file does not stop at its newest value. It carries rows for six more months with the sentinel -1.0 in the value column, which means "this cannot be computed yet", not "zero sunspots". Here is that edge of the file, with what the smoother can already say about each blank month.

"Already pinned" is the known part of the sum divided by 12. It is not an estimate: it is the floor that the published value cannot go below, because the missing months can only add. "If the rest look like the known ones" is the known part divided by the weight actually present, which is a guess and is labelled as one.
Watch the maximum move
This is the part that turns a caveat into a measurement. Drag the control to choose how much monthly data has arrived. With data through month T you can smooth as far as T minus 6, so the maximum you would have announced is the maximum of everything up to there. The chart draws the smoothed curve you could see at that moment, and the readout is the announcement you would have made.

The scoreboard, and the reason most of it refuses to answer
Now score the forecasts. Pick an observed series and a published forecast. Most pairings will not give you a number, and that is the finding rather than a limitation: published Cycle 25 forecasts are stated in at least three different statistics, and a percentage between two different statistics is not a forecast error, it is a category mistake with a decimal point. Where this page refuses, it prints the number it would have printed if it had gone ahead, so you can see what the mistake was worth.
The honest headline is not "solar forecasting fails". The 2019 consensus panel, five and a half years out, missed by a wide margin. NOAA's own experimental revision of 25 October 2023, about a year out, gave a range and a window that the observed maximum landed inside on both axes. Select those two in turn and the page will show you exactly that. The same goes the other way for the forecast that missed high: McIntosh and colleagues put Cycle 25 at 233 in 2020, and the same authors revised it down to 184 in September 2022 once the event their method waits for had happened. Both statements are on the scoreboard, because scoring the first without the second would imply they never moved.
The forward claim: an answer that is already three quarters decided
The smoothed value for the first blank month is not a mystery. Twelve of its thirteen terms are already published, and they carry eleven and a half of the window's twelve units of weight. Only one term is missing, and it enters with a weight of one half out of twelve, so the whole remaining uncertainty in a number that will be printed by the Royal Observatory of Belgium is one twenty-fourth of a single month's sunspot count.
The second claim is longer and simpler: the announced maximum of Cycle 25 has now held still for more than a year, and this page claims it will still be the same month at the same value, to within 0.5, on every future run of its verifier. Both claims are scored on every run and the outcome is appended to research/six-months-behind-the-sun/record.jsonl whether they hold or not.
The check, and everything that could still be wrong
Free choices this page made, which another honest person could have made differently
- Cycle 25 starts at December 2019. That is SILSO's own cycle-start month for cycle 25. Every maximum on this page is taken over months from then on. A different cycle boundary would change nothing here, because the maximum is nowhere near it, but the choice is ours and it is stated.
- The replay uses today's monthly values. It reconstructs what the announced maximum would have been given only the first N months, using the numbers in the file as it stands now. It is not an archive of what SILSO actually printed at the time, because we do not fetch SILSO's back issues. SILSO revises recent monthly means, so the early rows of the climb could have looked slightly different when they were new. The definitive flag in the same file is what says which months can still move, and the check panel above reports where that boundary currently sits.
- The bracket for the forward claim spans monthly means of 40 to 140. That range is a choice. It is wide enough to cover anything the current phase of the cycle plausibly produces and the page shows the arithmetic, so you can put your own number in.
- The "central estimate" is naive persistence, the mean of the last three published monthly means. It is not a solar forecast and it is not offered as one. SILSO publishes a daily provisional estimate (its EISN file) that would sharpen it considerably, and that file is on this site's feed allowlist: the reason this page does not use it is that this page fetches four files and no others, which is a rule we set ourselves, not a wall we ran into. The estimate is correspondingly weak, and the weakness is a choice rather than a constraint.
What this page is NOT recomputing, and why
The version 1 to version 2 recalibration. In July 2015 SILSO replaced the historical sunspot series with version 2.0. The folk summary is "multiply the old numbers by 1.6". That is wrong, and it is wrong in different directions in different eras. Dividing SILSO's live version 2 monthly file by SILSO's live version 1 archive, restricted to months where the version 1 value is at least 50, the median ratio is a step function:
Using 1.6 errs by about minus 16 percent in the Wolf era and plus 13 percent after 1947, so any "strongest cycle since year X" claim that crosses 1947 in a single currency is unsafe. SILSO's own release note for version 2.0 describes "a net increase of about 45% (correction variable with time) of the most recent part of the series, after 1947", which is the same story from the other side and corroborates the 1.416.
Those four numbers were measured on 14 August 2026 and are quoted here, not recomputed by this page. The version 1 archive file is not in this page's feed allowlist, and this page does not fetch anything that is not on that list, not even once. Everything else on this page is recomputed in your browser; this block is the one exception and it is labelled as such. What the page does recompute live, in the check panel above, is the same lesson in a currency it is allowed to fetch: the ratio between the two official smoothed sunspot numbers, which is also not a constant.
Yearly means. Bhowmik and Nandy's 2018 forecast is stated as a yearly mean, and the matching observed statistic lives in a SILSO file this page does not fetch. So the scoreboard refuses that pairing instead of scoring it against a smoothed value and quietly inflating their miss.
Two official sunspot numbers, and a maximum that is not eternally settled
There are two. The international sunspot number comes from SILSO in Brussels; NOAA SWPC publishes its own alongside it, in the same file. For October 2024 they read 160.9 and 153.6 smoothed. For April 2014 they read 116.4 and 124.9, a gap of similar size in the opposite direction. So "the cycle peaked at 161" and "the cycle peaked at 154" are both true statements from official sources, and the ratio between them is not a constant you can convert with. This page names which number it is quoting every time, and the check panel measures that ratio by decade so you can watch it drift.
The month is the robust part. The international smoothed number, SWPC's own smoothed number and the smoothed 10.7 cm radio flux, three quantities with different definitions and partly different instruments, all place the Cycle 25 maximum in the same month. The amplitude is a matter of which number you use. The month is not.
And 160.9 is not forever. It rests on monthly values SILSO has marked definitive, so it is stable under ordinary revision. It is not stable under recalibration. Version 2.0 moved every historical maximum in 2015, the community is discussing successors, and if one lands then this figure moves too, exactly as cycle 19's did.
