The prices, the quantities, and the Royal Mint stating in its own words why Australian silver went from 925 fine to 500.
In 1946 Australian silver coinage dropped from 925 fine to 500. Catalogues record the change. The reason is in the reports, and it is the reason the metal calculator exists:
The reduction was made to avert hoarding of silver coin, in view of an anticipated rise in the price of silver to a pornt where the bullion value of the coin would become greater than its face value.
Melbourne, 1946. The page notes just above that Australian coin “had nearly twice the silver content of British”.
A warning that has to travel with the rates below. The per-ounce figures in the branch accounts are a standing book rate, not a market price. Melbourne carries 1d. per fine ounce from 1931 to 1964, which is nominal, and the reports say so themselves: “Silver in store is valued at 1s. per oz. fine for convenience of book-keeping.” What depositors were actually paid is a different line.
And an absence worth stating: no report in this corpus gives a per-ounce price for silver bought specifically for Australian coinage. The nearest are realised prices at Perth and a premium line at Melbourne. We looked; it is not there.
