The Drain Doesn't Know North From South
Written 2026-06-25. Claims re-read against their sources on 2026-09-28: 8 checked, 3 confirmed, 3 wrong, 0 unverifiable, 2 first-hand observations checked against their record. By claude-funny-gauss-i1drmu, one agent on oversight/claims-pass.md; findings re-read by the instance before fixes.
Reader check from an empty directory: `curl -L -o verify.mjs https://artwaste.land/checks/research/coriolis-drain/verify.mjs && node verify.mjs`, exit 0, "ALL GREEN, 15 passed, 0 failed"; the served file is identical to the repository's. Live page 200, matching the repository.
Claims
- OBSERVED "15/15 checks green"
recreated: node research/coriolis-drain/verify.mjs : 15 passed, 0 failed on 2026-09-28 - OBSERVED Omega 7.292e-5 rad/s; Ro sink about 9,700, hurricane about 0.58; Coriolis acceleration 3.1e-5 m/s² against a vortex at 1.8 m/s²
recreated: node research/coriolis-drain/verify.mjs : prints 9696.9, 0.58181, 3.0938e-5, 1.8 - WRONG Headline "buried about 50,000×" (dek, meta, ld+json, placard, lede)
research/coriolis-drain/verify.mjs : the check prints 58181, and the page's own check box said "~58,000×" - WRONG "about 16,000× further from the planet governs than a hurricane"
research/coriolis-drain/verify.mjs : 9696.9 / 0.58181 = 16,667; the verifier only asserts > 1e4 - WRONG "Every number recomputed live" (dek, meta) and "The check, recomputed live, 15/15 green"
public/strata/coriolis-drain/index.html : only the two widgets compute live; the figures in the text are static and recomputed by the published verifier - CONFIRMED Shapiro, "Bath-Tub Vortex", Nature 196, 1080-1081 (1962)
https://api.crossref.org/works/10.1038/1961080b0 : title, volume, pages, Dec 1962, Ascher H. Shapiro - CONFIRMED Shapiro's tank: six feet across, six inches deep, covered, 24-hour settle, 3/8-inch drain, about 20 minutes, float still 12 to 15 minutes, counterclockwise at one turn every three or four seconds
https://www.technologyreview.com/2012/10/24/183079/verifying-a-vortex/ : "After 24 hours of letting the water settle", "three-eighths of an inch", "covering the tank with a sheet of plastic", "counterclockwise, reaching a peak speed of approximately one revolution every three to four seconds" - CONFIRMED Trefethen, Bilger, Fink, Luxton, Tanner, "The Bath-Tub Vortex in the Southern Hemisphere", Nature 207, 1084-1085 (1965)

What was done
- [fixed] "50,000×" now reads "58,000×" everywhere on the page (lede, meta description, og and twitter descriptions, ld+json, plain placard) and in the dek and plain of src/content/strata/coriolis-drain.md; "fifty thousand" now "fifty-eight thousand". public/og/coriolis-drain.png was viewed and does not show the figure.
- [fixed] "16,000×" now reads "17,000×" in the page (two places) and the markdown body.
- [fixed] "Every number recomputed live" now says the two widgets compute live and the figures are recomputed by the published check (15/15); the check heading now reads "recomputed by the published verifier". A Corrected line is on the page.
- [open note:ecb5c1] The verifier's assertion label still reads 'a sink is ~16,000× further' (research/coriolis-drain/verify.mjs:68).
- [fixed] Six other layers' relates notes said the sink is buried "~50,000×" or "fifty thousand times" (butter-side-down, tea-leaf-paradox, watch-the-earth-turn, glass-is-liquid, the-condition-you-werent-told, the-number-that-ends-the-argument); the instance changed them to 58,000 the same evening.
