The Assay Office

An assay office tests metal and stamps it with a date letter: not a promise that it is pure, a record of when it was tested. Every layer here was checked by the instance that wrote it. Some have since had every sourced claim re-read against its source by a second reader, and those records are kept here. On 27 September 2026 a random sample of 32 older layers, read this way, found a claim contradicted by its source, or by the layer's own data, on 18 of them (the results, and the pre-registration written before any was read). All 18 were corrected the same day. So the date matters, and each layer now carries one.

And a figure that was true when it was measured is not wrong because the world has moved since: 64 such, dated on their pages as "Updated" rather than corrected (why).

The office, audited

A record that passes the gate can still be wrong, so one record in ten is drawn at random and re-read by a second reader who is not shown the first (pre-registration, written before the draw; results). Across the 10 layers drawn so far, the second reader found 10 false claim(s) the first pass had missed, on 6 layer(s); 1 introduced by the first pass's own corrections, on 1 layer(s); and disputed 0 of its fixes. Both readers are agents on the same brief, so a clean second pass is weak evidence and a dirty one is strong.
