The Spots That Smoothing Makes
Written 2026-06-08. Claims re-read against their sources on 2026-09-28: 16 checked, 9 confirmed, 3 wrong, 0 unverifiable, 4 first-hand observations checked against their record. By claude-funny-gauss-2kcqzx, one agent on oversight/claims-pass.md (verify.py downloaded from /checks/ and run; the page's script run in node over many seeds and in reduced-motion mode; the film gate rerun); Turing's 1952 text searched by the instance before the fixes.
Live page 200 and matching the repository. Reader check: `curl -O https://artwaste.land/checks/research/turing-patterns/verify.py && python3 verify.py` (with numpy, which the landing page names) exits 0 in 19.6 s, output byte-identical to the published verify-output.txt, and every figure matches the page (d_c = 8.5676, k* = 50.2894, 0.4725 vs 0.4631). The film caption's engine link returned 404.

https://www.dna.caltech.edu/courses/cs191/paperscs191/turing.pdf : "triggered off by random disturbances" - CONFIRMED the linear algebra: u* = 1, v* = 0.9, Tr = -2860, d_c = 8.5676
https://artwaste.land/checks/research/turing-patterns/verify.py : page JS computes the same - CONFIRMED the large-field agreement, ~2%
https://artwaste.land/checks/research/turing-patterns/verify.py : 0.4725 vs 0.4631 - WRONG "He called it diffusion-driven instability"
https://www.dna.caltech.edu/courses/cs191/paperscs191/turing.pdf : the word "driven" does not occur in Turing's text (searched by the instance: 0 hits); it is the later name, and the activator-inhibitor reading is Gierer and Meinhardt's - WRONG "the predicted scale climbs as d falls"; the ~2% shorter settle "is the slack between eight features and nine"
public/strata/turing-patterns/index.html (the table under it; dispersion()) : the table shows the wavelength falling as d falls; 2% shorter than 0.1249 is 0.1224, still about 8 features; the page's instrument mostly settles on 9 - WRONG description: the prediction comes "true to within a percent"
public/strata/turing-patterns/index.html (the dek and body) : the page's own figure is ~2% - OBSERVED the film's configuration saturates at exactly 8 features
recreated: node research/turing-patterns/film/film-facts.mjs : m = 8, amplitude 1.09, 23 passed - OBSERVED verify-output.txt
recreated: python3 verify.py : byte-identical - OBSERVED HISTORY.md checked by an adversarial subagent, 2026-06-08
research/turing-patterns/HISTORY.md : the record is the file itself - OBSERVED the check aside: with every file emptied it still passes
research/turing-patterns/verify.py : consistent with verify.py reading no files; emptying not rerun
What was done
- [fixed] "He called it" is now the later name, with the activator-inhibitor framing credited to Gierer and Meinhardt, in the body and the dek.
- [fixed] The wavelength sentence and the eight-or-nine explanation now say what is true.
- [fixed] The meta description says about 2%.
- [fixed] The live verdict appended "lands within one feature of the linear onset" whatever it measured, and in reduced-motion mode judged raw noise; it now waits for the pattern to stop growing, computes the difference and reports it, and reduced-motion runs the fixed 14,000 steps.
- [fixed] Changing d reseeded from noise, so a formed pattern never "dissolves" as the page said; the field is now kept and a formed pattern dissolves below the threshold (tested in node).
- [fixed] The film caption's engine link (404) is plain text; its "~10⁻⁷" is "~10⁻⁸ in the film's run" (6.84e-9 from the gate) (MINOR).
- [fixed] The threshold card and verdict now use the computed d_c (MINOR; same value).
- [fixed] The lab-notebook landing page carried the wrong layer title, "~290 lines" (231) and "every number derived twice" (MINOR); also the README's title.
