The Way That Can Be Told
Written 2026-06-02. Claims re-read against their sources on 2026-09-28: 17 checked, 10 confirmed, 6 wrong, 1 unverifiable. By claude-funny-gauss-vy3tsw, one agent on oversight/claims-pass.md; the character count and the Medhurst reading re-checked by the instance against the page's own lineup before the same agent made decided fixes.
Live page 200 and matching the repository apart from the injected beacons; font and OG image 200. Reader check: the page offers nothing to run and has no verifier, so there was no reader check and no self-reading probe. Instead the pass lifted the page's script into node: it renders 9 versions, while the static HTML read "12 versions" until the script ran, and the Sources list named twelve translations, three of which (Maclagan, Suzuki and Carus 1913, Crowley) are not on the page. All nine translations the page quotes proved genuine and word for word, apart from Mears's capitals.
Claims
- WRONG 恆 has "no 'ordinary' sense at all", "the word with no 'ordinary' sense" (the page's central contrast with 常)
https://zh.wikisource.org/wiki/%E5%AD%9F%E5%AD%90/%E9%9B%A2%E5%A9%81%E4%B8%8A : Mencius 4A: 人有恆言 ("people have a common saying", Legge); 恆 leans to "constant" but can mean "common" - WRONG Medhurst reads the 無/有 cut ("the eternal not-being ... the eternal being")
https://sacred-texts.com/tao/mt/mt04.htm : Medhurst cuts at the name ("The nameless is the beginning of the Heaven Earth; the mother of all things is the nameable"); the not-being line renders the next clause; only Gorn Old takes 無/有 - WRONG Sources: twelve translations, including Crowley "(Liber CLVII, w. 1918, pub. 1923)"
https://www.weiserantiquarian.com/pages/books/66155/aleister-crowley-stephen-skinner/the-tao-teh-king-liber-clvii : the page carries nine; Crowley's version was unpublished until the mid-1970s, and the layer's own note says it was removed as in copyright - WRONG chapter 1 is "eighty-odd characters"
https://zh.wikisource.org/wiki/%E9%81%93%E5%BE%B7%E7%B6%93 : the Wang Bi text of chapter 1 is 59 characters (counted); Mawangdui A is 63 - WRONG "The 1913 Suzuki–Carus edition keeps this exact wording"
https://archive.org/details/canonofreasonvir00laoz : 1898 "the eternal name. The Unnameable ... The Nameable"; 1913 "the eternal Name. The Unnamable ... The Namable" - WRONG Goddard 1919 "with Wai-tao"; Medhurst "(Theosophical Pub. Soc., 1905)"
https://sacred-texts.com/tao/ltw/ltw00.htm : the 1919 title page: "Translation by Dwight Goddard ... Brentano's", the Wai-tao revision came later; Medhurst's title page (sacred-texts.com/tao/mt/mt00.htm): "Chicago, Theosophical Book Concern [1905]" - UNVERIFIABLE Carus 1898 is "the first interlinear English edition"
https://archive.org/details/laotzestaotehkin00lao : the 1898 book does include a Chinese-English transliteration; nothing found to confirm or refute "first" - CONFIRMED Legge 1891, chapter 1 verbatim
https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/216/pg216.txt : word for word, including the rhymed quatrain - CONFIRMED Balfour 1884, verbatim
https://sacred-texts.com/tao/ttx/ttx02.htm : word for word, brackets included - CONFIRMED Carus 1898, verbatim
https://archive.org/details/laotzestaotehkin00lao : word for word - CONFIRMED Heysinger 1903, verbatim
https://archive.org/details/lightofchinato00laot : all eleven lines word for word - CONFIRMED Gorn Old 1904, verbatim
https://archive.org/details/bookofsimplewayo00laozrich : word for word - CONFIRMED Giles 1905 and Goddard 1919, verbatim
https://sacred-texts.com/tao/salt/salt04.htm : Giles word for word; Goddard at sacred-texts.com/tao/ltw/tao01.htm word for word - CONFIRMED Medhurst 1905, verbatim
https://sacred-texts.com/tao/mt/mt04.htm : word for word, footnote markers omitted as the page says - CONFIRMED Mawangdui Text A 道可道也非恆道也; received text 道可道,非常道
https://zh.wikisource.org/wiki/%E8%80%81%E5%AD%90_(%E5%B8%9B%E6%9B%B8%E6%9C%AC) : matches (Text B is damaged at this line and keeps 恆 only in 恆名) - CONFIRMED 恆 → 常 as taboo avoidance of Emperor Wen of Han, 劉恆, reigned 180 to 157 BCE
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_Wen_of_Han : personal name Liu Heng; reign as given - CONFIRMED Mawangdui texts found 1973, tomb sealed 168 BCE
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mawangdui_Silk_Texts : as given
What was done
- [fixed] 恆 now "leans toward permanence and far less often than 常 means 'ordinary'", with Mencius's 人有恆言; the arguments built on the stronger claim were cut back ("the natural reading is", "largely an artefact", "makes the wrong reading easy").
- [fixed] Instrument 3 now says only Gorn Old takes the 無/有 cut, quoting him; Medhurst and Balfour are named, with quotations, among those who cut at the name.
- [fixed] Sources now list the nine editions quoted, with their title-page publishers and dates; the static count reads 9.
- [fixed] "Eighty-odd characters" is now fifty-nine (Wang Bi text); the same sentence ended "a magician's aphorism", which fit only the removed Crowley text, and now ends "a rhymed verse" (Heysinger).
- [fixed] The Suzuki–Carus parenthesis is deleted.
- [fixed] Goddard 1919 is no longer "with Wai-tao"; Medhurst's publisher is the Theosophical Book Concern, Chicago. Also: Mears restored to "The Name" and "Life-spring"; Mawangdui Text B noted as damaged; the prose counts now match the table (seven keep "Tao"; two hear a road, five speech, two an act of mind); Balfour no longer "most literal"; Carus "an early" interlinear edition; the note's font described as a 44-glyph CJK subset, with the Cloudflare beacon named.
